DEGREES
In Bujinkan, besides the color of the belt, there are "patches", created by Hatsumi Sensei, that delineate in a significative way the partecipant's experience.
Beginner/novice
grade: 10th kyu-1st kyu
Belt: white for 10th kyu, from 9th kyu on green for men and red for women
Minimum requirements: a licensed instructor must certificate the promotion
Advanced/junior instructor
grade: 1st dan-4thdan
Belt: black
Minimum requirements: a licensed instructor can certificate promotions until a degree lower than his own
Responsibilities: a "Shidoshi Ho" can teach and promote degrees, but only below the guidance of a Shidoshi/Shihan. He must own a "Shidoshi Ho" certificate and be registered as instructor in the current year.
Instructor (Shidoshi)
grade: 5th dan-9th dan
Belt: black
Minimum requirements: passing the Sakki test at Honbu Dojo in Noda (Chiba ken, Japan). Feasible also elsewher in particular conditions, only by licensed Dai Shihan/15°dan
Responsibilities: a Shidoshi can run a dojo e have affiliates dojos. In a technical level they are considered Masaaki Hatsumi Sōke students
Master/professionist (Shihan)
grade: 10th dan-15thdan
Belt: black
Minimum requirements: for 10th dan and 15th dan there must be signatures of at least 3 Shihan supporting the promotion
Responsibilities: same as Shidoshi's but with a different seniorship. Higher responsibility of reference.
Great Master (Dai Shihan)
It's not a degree as much as an honorary title. It's given to experienced practicers who are seen as the excellency or potential excellency in representing Bujinkan around the world.
